Empathy must guide transportation improvements

Yesterday I took my bike to a meeting in San Francisco. I had three incidents: a delivery driver and a rideshare driver blocked the lane, and then a man driving an SUV limo almost doored me.

A truly safe bike network would make it impossible for drivers to act like this. Curbs would protect people riding bikes from parallel parking, loading, and travel zones, with buffer to prevent dooring.

People can’t see those risks and opportunities unless they ride. The future of our streets must be designed by people who use them on two legs and two wheels.

A lot of people were riding that morning, including a dad on a cargo bike with multiple kids in tow.
