Look for bikes before you open your car door
Yesterday I watched my partner almost get doored by a car as she rode her bike. A driver stopped and a passenger flung the right side door open as she approached in the bike lane. Thankfully she was anticipating it, otherwise she would have been injured.
As more people walk, bike, scoot, and skateboard, traffic will be less predictable until we retrofit our streets and establish new norms. It’s your responsibility to look out for others. A good practice is the Dutch Reach, as it physically prompts you to look behind before opening your car door.
